Inhalants - An Interview with Harvey Weiss of the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition, Show #5 Februrary 9, 2007

One on five students in America has used an inhalant to get high by the time he or she reaches the eighth grade. Parents don't know that inhalants, cheap, legal and accessible products, are as popular among middle school students as marijuana. Even fewer know the deadly effects the poisons in these products have on the brain and body when they are inhaled or "huffed."

Today's podcast is an interview with Harvey Weiss, Executive Director of the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition. The NIPC serves serves as an inhalant referral and information clearinghouse, stimulates media coverage about inhalant issues, develops informational materials, produces ViewPoint (a quarterly newsletter), provides training and technical assistance and leads a week-long national grassroots inhalant education and awareness campaign.

Fixing What's Wrong With Drug Education in Schools Show #2 October 14, 2006

A recent survey conducted by Join Together a program of the Boston University School of Public Health shows that few teachers believe that alcohol and other drug prevention programs work. Only 2 percent of more than 3,700 respondents felt that their school-based prevention programs were effective. The report says that teachers are skeptical of the prevention programs they deliver. It goes on to say that teachers cite the need more relevant study materials, more time to do prevention, more support, and more training.

Although more training and enhanced study materials would certainly do no harm, how does this change the current destructive belief permeating our schools and our culture that drug prevention doesn't work? It is not a matter of more time, more study materials, or more training, but a need for a fundamental change in how we define prevention, set prevention goals, and understand how children adopt and reinforce healthy and unhealthy behaviors.

Steps for Developing a Comprehensive Campus Alcohol Abuse Prevention Program Show #1 September 15, 2006

Prevention University Series: Establishing a Prevention Coordinating Committee. The establishment of a Prevention Coordinating Committee (PCC) serves as a critical foundation for organizing a campus' alcohol and other drug prevention effort. Not only does this help in the efficiency of campus efforts, but it also engages the key stakeholders in the process. The episode is not meant as a full explaination of a PCC - training and consultation is needed to create and maintain this valuable foundational piece of strategic planning.
